Minister of NSC Came for an Inspection

To better understand the current status of NSRRC (National Synchrotron Radiation Research Center ) as well as the progress of TPS (Taiwan Photon Source) Construction Project, the Minister of NSC (National Science Council), Academician Cyrus C. Y. Chu visited NSRRC for an inspection on May 16, 2012, accompanied by the Deputy Minister, Dr. Cheng-Hong Chen, and the chair of Department of Planning and Evaluation for NSC. The chairman and members of NSRRC Board of Trustees including Dr. Lih J. Chen, Dr. Yu Wang and Dr. Chien-Te Chen were invited to join the inspection group.

Minister Chu’s visit started with Director Shih-Lin Chang’s current status briefing, and then he had a discussion with the executives on the future planning of NSRRC’s organization and technology development. Following the discussion, Minister Chu went on to the Taiwan Photon Source construction site to receive detailed insights about the progress of the project and the quality of construction from Deputy Director, Dr. Guo-Hwei Luo and the leader of the TPS civil engineering sub-project, Dr. Jau-Ping Wang, and visited the lab for testing and assembling linac accelarator. Minister Chu also inspected current Taiwan Light Source (TLS) facilities and learned some experiment stations such as protein crystallography experimental stations, dragon beamline, high-efficiency soft X-ray experimental station and small-angle X-ray scattering experiment station by the explanation from the Deputy Director, Dr. Di-Jing Huang. After the field inspection at NSRRC current site, he proceeded by visiting a plant for installation and testing of the TPS acceleratorthe in Chu-Dong. The leader of the TPS accelerator engineering sub-project, Dr. June-Rong Chen, guided the executives to inspect the vacuum welding and assembly measurement laboratory, 1/24 section of the storage ring assembled prototype, the booster ring/ injector area / front end assembly and testing lab, the magnetic field measurement lab and the positioning assembly measurement lab. Among the labs, 1/24 section of the storage ring prototype has just been successfully assembled. The executives were especially impressed with the colleague’s capability of the accuracy on the integration of equipments. Having finished the over-two-hour inspection, the visiting group and NSRRC executives left after a simple lunch meal in the plant.

The inspection of the minister of NSC and chairman of the board was encouraging to the TPS team under great pressure of the project’s progress and for the NSRRC colleagues committed to improving the Taiwan Synchrotron Radiation Research. With the government support and the persistent endeavor of the academic and research communities, in the near future we are to witness the smooth formation of the world’s top light source facilities in Taiwan and the ignition of a new light to Taiwan's scientific research.
